A couple weeks ago I noticed I was suddenly making a lot less sales than I was used too. Now I wasn’t quite sure what was causing this – especially since this is normally one of the best times of my year for selling. I went ahead and remade my opt-in pages and rewrote my entire sales funnel and split tested. The results? Absolutely no difference, it was converting at under 5%… that’s atrocious!
After spending some time talking to others and trying to get to the bottom of this I realized why I wasn’t making sales – or rather, why I wasn’t getting credit for the sales that I actually WAS making. Apparently there is a problem called link hijacking that is becoming more and more prevalent with affiliate marketing. Basically this means that no matter how good my sales funnel was, or how many people it convinced to buy a product, I wouldn’t get any sales.
I guess I should quickly explain how link hijacking works. There are two different ways with the second being more common and more easily avoidable – if you know how.
The first way is that when you direct someone to a product, they change the affiliate ID to their own to credit themselves with the sell. This is hard to stop because they know what they’re doing and are most likely an affiliate themselves. This is just something you have to get used to, but this shouldn’t affected your sales nearly as much as the next way.

The other thing that can cause you to not get credit for a sale is spyware. More notably a new type of spyware that is now invading the internet that will automatically change affiliate ID’s to those of the spyware’s creators. That means that the more work you put into making sells, the more sells you are making – for the creator of that spyware!
One way to mostly fix the first problem and completely fix the second problem is through the process of link cloaking. This means that you hide the url to the website with your own redirect cloak so that spyware can’t change the affiliate ID and users can’t find it to change it themselves.
You may have heard of services such as TinyURL or Bit.LY, these are great services for shortening URLs, but they shouldn’t be used for link cloaking because they often break affiliate cookies (which means you won’t get credit for sales). Instead you should find one of the link cloaks available specifically for affiliate marketing.

From time to time I get questions about GDI (Global Domains International) and whether it is a worthwhile affiliate program to join. GDI has been in my portfolio since I began internet marketing casually 7 years ago and I continue to think of it as a “must have affiliate program“.
I thought I would share a recent email response to a GDI team member who had recently joined and asked me for assistance in building his business:
I have been with GDI for 7 years now and receive a modest passive income every month from it. Likely it would be a much greater success for me if I’d worked at it as hard as others have. Regardless of whether someone makes GDI their primary affiliate program or not I truly believe it should be part of everyone’s portfolio.
Success with GDI rests to a great deal in your approach to it. Can you use the features for your own business or personal interest? I use my domain as a forwarder, for example; my GDI domain www.123incomemoneytree.ws currently forwards to 1 of my GDI referral pages. Decide how you can best make use of the GDI tools you are paying $10 every month for and consider that a good investment.
Now, can GDI also be a business investment for you? I figure $10 a month is a pretty cheap “gamble” while you figure out whether it can be for yourself.
Here are some quick tips for you – feel free to ask questions:
- Take the time to read every help page in your GDI back office and figure out what you can or will use and how.
- If you are planning to market GDI as a business opportunity, plan ways you can do this. Here is what I have found helpful:
- Its cheaper in the long run to buy a package of DVD’s and if you get a request for a DVD send it yourself rather than paying GDI to send it for you. I don’t send DVD’s overseas because the cost is prohibitive and unless you have some miraculous foresight that the person requesting is going to be building a big team for you, it is a poor return on investment.
- Handing out DVD’s to people you meet or to friends and family is not everyone’s cup of tea. Do what is comfortable to you. If you are excited about GDI then building a team of 10 people (which covers your investment cost every month) won’t be too difficult.
- Sometimes it is easier to market an opportunity like GDI as part of a larger affiliate program package. Here is 1 that I use successfully: Plug in Profit Site. I started with GDI (Global Domains International) way back in 1994. It was one of the first affiliate programs I worked with and one of the few I still use to this day. What is the attraction to this top affiliate program and how does it continue to grow after all this time?
It helps that the GDI business opportunity promotes a product that has some built-in authenticity. Not just anyone can start a registered domain company and there are regulatory bodies that help to control who does. The DOT WS (.ws) domain extension has become a recognized option with many popular domain registrars which is another tribute to the success of this Inc. 500 company.
Personally, I like the fact that the Global Domains International business opportunity carries only a $10 USD monthly product commitment. Even without the opportunity to earn commissions from home, the $10 fee pays for your hosted domain with most of the basics you come to expect from a website hosting company.
Compared to many other affiliate programs I’ve tried, it is relatively quite easy to at least break even on the $10 monthly charge. A combination of 10 people on your team (downline in MLM terms) whether sponsored by you, placed or spilled over from team members above you or recruited by members below you in the team matrix – that is all it takes to earn your $10 back each month. Most people should be able to achieve at least that much in 3-6 months of membership with GDI – thats only $30-60 total investment in that time whereas many affiliate programs have a monthly fee as large.
Global Domains International continues to grow and in my opinion continues to be a “must have” in any affiliate marketing porfolio whether promoted full or part time. Finding top affiliate programs that pay for themselves fairly quickly and have a long standing reputation is not as easy as one would think.
If there is a draw back to GDI it is the payment information required up front when starting the 7 day free trial. Some people will see that as a gimmick but in reality Global Domains International needs to protect the legitimate product and service being offered. I understand that some potential affiliates will be turned away because they either do not have an accepted payment option or because they have been burned on “free trials” before. The important thing is to remember to cancel before the trial is done to avoid the first payment should you not with to participate. But even if you forget to cancel, I’d consider $10 an acceptable risk with a well established company like Global Domains International.
